About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About M&S Choco Pops

About M&S Choco Pops

The best bit was always the milk at the end. You know this. Everyone knows this.

M&S Choco Pops are the Marks & Spencer take on the chocolate cereal that sat on breakfast tables through half of Britain's childhood, and a fair few adulthoods since. Little crunchy pops, a bowl of milk, and a spoon moving faster than anyone should at seven in the morning.

People who grew up with an M&S food hall round the corner have opinions about its own-label cereal. This is the box they mean.

Pour it, eat it quick before it softens, then drink what is left. Nobody is watching.

Frequently asked questions about M&S Choco Pops

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is. These are M&S Choco Pops from the UK, the same box you would pick up at Marks back home, and we ship them from within Canada.

Q: How big is the box?

A: 375g. A good few breakfasts if you share, noticeably fewer if you do not.

Q: Is it a good thing to send someone who misses home?

A: For anyone who grew up near an M&S food hall, a box of these says more than a card ever will. Add a few other British bits and you have a proper parcel from home.

More about M&S Choco Pops

M&S own-label cereal has its own spot in the British kitchen cupboard. A box of it on the counter meant somebody had done the shop at Marks that week, and the household was doing quite well, thank you.

In Canada the search is rarely for chocolate cereal in general. It is for this one, with M&S on the front, because that is the box from the flat you shared at university, or your gran's kitchen, or the Saturday mornings in front of the telly.

It comes in a 375g box that lives happily in the cupboard. Roll the bag down tight, close the lid properly and it stays crunchy. Breakfast is the official use. The after-school bowl, the eleven o'clock at night bowl and the handful straight from the box are the real ones.

Most people who order a box end up adding a few more M&S bits to the basket, because once food hall nostalgia starts it is very hard to stop. A proper British tea to go alongside rarely hurts either.
