About Maoam Stripes

About Maoam Stripes

Nobody has ever opened a pack of Maoam Stripes and eaten just the one. Nobody has ever claimed to have tried, either.

These are the long, flat fruit chews from the corner shop, the bus home and the back seat on the way to the coast. You peel the wrapper, fold the stripe in half, and your jaw is spoken for until further notice.

They are chewy in that particular Maoam way: soft enough to start, stubborn enough to make you earn it. If you grew up with them, you already know the face you pull.

The pack gets shared. In theory.

Frequently asked questions about Maoam Stripes

Q: Is this the UK version of Maoam Stripes?

A: It is, the British pack, brought over by The Great British Shop and shipped from within Canada. Same stripes, same wrapper, same jaw workout.

Q: How big is the pack?

A: It is a 140g pack of individually wrapped stripes. Enough to share, if anyone is watching.

Q: Do they make a good gift?

A: For anyone who grew up in Britain, very much so. Hand someone a pack and watch them go quiet for a second, then reach for one.

Q: How do they arrive?

A: Each stripe is wrapped on its own inside the pack, so they arrive tidy and keep that way in the cupboard.

More about Maoam Stripes

In Britain, Maoam lives on the sweet shelf at exactly child's-eye height, between the things you were allowed and the things you begged for. Stripes were the pocket-money pick: cheap, long-lasting, and easy to split with a mate if you were feeling generous.

In Canada, people go looking for them for the simplest reason. A taste takes you straight back to a school trip, a Saturday sweet run or a grandparent's handbag. Kids raised here by British parents tend to ask for them by name, usually after one trip back.

The pack holds individually wrapped stripes, so they sit happily in a cupboard, a desk drawer or a lunchbox and come out one at a time. Or that is the plan. They also travel well, which matters on a long drive with restless passengers in the back.

Most people do not stop at one British sweet. Maoam Stripes tend to go in the basket with other chews, a few chocolate bars from home and something sour, which is roughly how a proper corner-shop haul has always looked.
