About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Lyons Fig Rolls

About Lyons Fig Rolls

Nobody ever names fig rolls as their favourite biscuit. Then the packet is empty and everyone goes quiet. Lyons Fig Rolls are the soft, cakey biscuit wrapped round a dark fig middle, the one from your nan's biscuit tin that turned up beside every cup of tea.

They are not trying to be clever. Soft outside, sticky centre, a shape that sits neatly between finger and thumb.

You dunk one, briefly, because you know what happens if you linger. Then you dunk another.

If you grew up on them, you already know the truth: a packet does not last a week. Nobody has ever made it last a week.

Frequently asked questions about Lyons Fig Rolls

Q: Are these the UK Lyons Fig Rolls?

A: They are, the British packet from the United Kingdom, and we ship them from within Canada. Same biscuit, same name on the front.

Q: How big is the packet?

A: It is a 200g packet, which sounds like plenty until two people and a pot of tea get involved.

Q: Do they survive being posted?

A: Fig rolls are a soft, sturdy biscuit, so they cope with the journey far better than anything delicate. They arrive packed with the rest of your order, ready for the kettle.

Q: Are they good to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very. A packet of fig rolls and a box of proper tea says more than most cards, and it gets eaten a lot faster.

More about Lyons Fig Rolls

Fig rolls live in the plain, dependable corner of the British biscuit aisle, next to the digestive and the rich tea. They are the biscuit for an ordinary afternoon: the tea break at work, the flask on a walk, the plate that comes out when someone pops round unannounced.

People in Canada go looking for them because the memory is so particular. It is that exact softness, the slightly chewy middle, and the Lyons name on the packet that sat in the cupboard at home. A fig roll from somewhere else is a fig roll. This one is the one you remember.

The 200g packet keeps happily in the cupboard. Once it is open, fold the end over tightly or tip the lot into a tin with a lid, and they stay soft for longer. They travel well in a lunchbox, and they are sturdy enough for a quick dunk, if you keep your nerve.

Most people put them in the basket next to a box of British tea bags, which makes sense. A fig roll without a brew is just a snack. With one, it is a sit down.
