About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Jacob's Mini Cheddars Red Leicester

About Jacob's Mini Cheddars Red Leicester

Nobody in history has eaten one Mini Cheddar. Jacob's Mini Cheddars Red Leicester are the little round crackers you remember, with Red Leicester stepping in for the usual cheddar and giving the whole thing a richer, nuttier cheese flavour.

They were in the lunchbox, on the pub table next to a pint, in the bowl at every party where the grown-ups talked for too long. You went in for a polite handful and came out with half the bowl.

If the originals are the reliable choice, these are the ones people quietly hunt for. Open the pack, put it down for one second, and look again. Empty.

Frequently asked questions about Jacob's Mini Cheddars Red Leicester

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is. These are the British Mini Cheddars Red Leicester from Jacob's, and we ship them from within Canada.

Q: How do they arrive?

A: Packed up properly so they turn up as crackers rather than crumbs. What you do to them after that is your business.

Q: Are they a good thing to send someone who misses Britain?

A: Very much so. A pack of these in a parcel of British snacks says more than a card ever could, and it disappears faster too.

Q: Do you carry other Jacob's crackers?

A: Jacob's crackers turn up in the shop regularly, cream crackers included, so it is worth a look through the pantry shelf. Ask us in the shop if you are after a particular one.

More about Jacob's Mini Cheddars Red Leicester

Mini Cheddars live in that very British corner of the cupboard where a cracker does a crisp's job. Too savoury to be a biscuit, too sensible to be a crisp, and somehow the first thing to go when the snacks come out.

Red Leicester is a cheese most British people know by name before they can spell it, so a Red Leicester Mini Cheddar tastes of somewhere specific. For anyone in Canada who grew up with them, one handful brings back the school trip, the beer garden and the car journey where the pack got passed to the back seat and never came back.

They keep happily in the cupboard, as crackers do. Fold the pack over or clip it shut once it is open, if it survives that long. Have them with a drink, tip them into a packed lunch, or add them to a cheese board for the people who think a cheese board could always use more cheese.

Jacob's is the name behind the original Mini Cheddars and the cream crackers that half of Britain has in the cupboard. People tend to pick these up alongside a box of proper tea, a few bags of British crisps and whatever else has been missing from the snack shelf.
