About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup

About Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup

Sick day, cold day, can't-be-bothered day: the answer was always the same tin. Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup, warmed in a pan and eaten with bread for dunking.

It is a colour no tomato has ever been and a taste you know from the first spoonful. Smooth, sweet, comforting, and somehow gone before the toast is.

You remember it in a flask at the football, or on a tray in front of the telly with a blanket over your knees. One bowl and you are nine again, off school, very much milking it.

Keep a few in. The day you need one, you will be glad you did.

Frequently asked questions about Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup

Q: Is this the UK version of Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup?

A: Yes, this is the British tin, the one you grew up with. We bring it over to Halifax and ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the tin?

A: It is a 400g tin. That is one generous bowl, or two if you are sharing and have plenty of toast to make up the difference.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Tuck a few tins into a care package with some tea and a bag of crisps, and you have sent a sick day from 1994 in the best possible way.

More about Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup

In Britain, Heinz Cream of Tomato is simply the soup. Other flavours sit on the shelf beside it and people do buy them, but this is the tin that lives at the back of every cupboard, the one your mum reached for without looking.

People in Canada go looking for it because they want that exact taste, the one tied to rainy afternoons and being looked after. The UK tin tastes like the one you grew up with, and that is the only test that matters.

The 400g tin does one proper bowl, or two smaller ones with a stack of toast. Pour it into a pan, warm it gently, stir now and then. It sits quite happily in the cupboard until the weather turns or somebody comes down with a cold, which in a Canadian winter is not a long wait.

It rarely travels alone. A tin of Heinz Baked Beans tends to join it in the basket, along with a box of proper tea and the makings of a cheese toastie, because tomato soup without something to dip in it is just a sad drink.
