About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Galaxy Smooth Caramel Bar

About Galaxy Smooth Caramel Bar

The plan was two squares. The plan never survives contact with a Galaxy Smooth Caramel Bar.

It is Galaxy, the famously smooth one, wrapped round a soft caramel centre that takes its time letting go of each square. It is the bar from the corner shop, the petrol station and the Friday night big shop, the one you reach for when the day has gone on a bit.

This is the UK bar, and it ships from within Canada, so the sofa, the telly and the caramel can finally be reunited.

Fold the wrapper over to save some for tomorrow. Very noble. Nobody believes you.

Frequently asked questions about Galaxy Smooth Caramel Bar

Q: How big is the bar?

A: It is a 135g bar, the bigger sharing kind. Whether it actually gets shared is between you and your conscience.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: It does. It is flat, light and goes in a parcel easily, and for someone who grew up with it, a Galaxy caramel says more than a card ever will.

Q: How should I store it?

A: Somewhere cool and dry, away from sunlight and radiators. The caramel likes a calm life.

Q: Do you have other Galaxy chocolate?

A: Have a look through the chocolate section, where the Galaxy bars sit together. It is a good excuse to settle the plain versus caramel argument once and for all.

More about Galaxy Smooth Caramel Bar

In Britain, Galaxy is the chocolate people pick when they want comfort rather than crunch. The caramel bar sits right next to the plain milk one at every till in the country, and most households have a firm opinion on which is better.

People in Canada search for it by name because a memory is specific. It is not chocolate and caramel in general, it is that exact softness, that slow stretch of caramel, the taste of a break-time at school or a long drive up the motorway.

This is a bar built for sharing, at least in theory, and it breaks into squares for handing round. Keep it somewhere cool and out of the sun so the caramel stays soft and the chocolate stays glossy. Some swear by the fridge for a firmer bite, which is a perfectly acceptable opinion to be wrong about.

It tends to end up in the basket next to a box of proper tea bags and a few other bars from home. A cup of tea and a row of this is about as British as an evening in gets.
