About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Frank Cooper’s Fine Cut Oxford Marmalade

About Frank Cooper’s Fine Cut Oxford Marmalade

Toast without marmalade is just warm bread with ambitions. Frank Cooper's Fine Cut Oxford Marmalade sorts that out.

This is the jar from the kitchen table at home: dark, sharp, and sweet enough to forgive you for getting up early. Fine cut means thin shreds, so it spreads properly instead of landing on the toast in planks.

People who grew up with it have opinions. Butter first, always. Toast gone slightly cold in the rack, if you were raised right. Nobody agrees on how much goes on, but everybody has a second slice.

A proper one-pound jar, which sounds like plenty until you open it.

Frequently asked questions about Frank Cooper’s Fine Cut Oxford Marmalade

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is. Made in the United Kingdom, the same jar you would pick up at home, and it ships from within Canada.

Q: How big is the jar?

A: 454g, so a proper one-pound jar. That is a good few weeks of toast, depending on how heavy-handed the household is.

Q: What is the difference between fine cut and the original?

A: Fine cut has thin shreds that spread easily and sit neatly on toast. The original Oxford is the thicker cut, for people who like something to chew on.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Hand a Brit a jar of Frank Cooper's and watch them start planning tomorrow's breakfast on the spot.

More about Frank Cooper’s Fine Cut Oxford Marmalade

In Britain, marmalade is breakfast in the same way the kettle is breakfast. Oxford marmalade sits at the darker, sharper end of the shelf, and Frank Cooper's is the name most people mean when they say it.

Moving to Canada sorts out a lot of things. The morning routine is not one of them. People search for this jar because it tastes of one particular kitchen, and near enough is not the same thing. Other marmalades exist. This is the one your nan bought.

It comes in a 454g glass jar that sits happily in the cupboard until it is opened, then lid back on and into the fridge, as the label says. Toast is the obvious job, but it does well on crumpets, stirred into a bread and butter pudding, or brushed over a ham before it goes back in the oven.

If you like more bite, Frank Cooper's also does its Oxford marmalade in a thicker cut, and the chunky camp will tell you so at length. Most people buy it alongside a box of proper tea bags and a packet of crumpets, which is breakfast sorted.
