About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Daddies Brown Sauce

About Daddies Brown Sauce

There are two kinds of people at a British breakfast table: the ones who reach for the red sauce, and the ones who know better. Daddies Brown Sauce is for the second lot.

Dark, tangy and sharp enough to wake you up before the tea does, it goes on the bacon butty, the sausage sandwich and the full fry-up with the fried bread you swore you had given up.

Then you moved to Canada, made a bacon sandwich on a Saturday morning, and stood there holding it with nothing to put on it. That is a sad sandwich.

This fixes it.

Frequently asked questions about Daddies Brown Sauce

Q: Is this the British Daddies?

A: It is: the UK bottle, the one you remember, and it ships from within Canada. No hunting through import aisles required.

Q: Is Daddies the same as HP?

A: No. They are both brown sauces, but Daddies has its own taste and its own fans. We will sell you either and stay well out of the argument.

Q: How much is in the bottle?

A: 400g, which is a fair few bacon sandwiches. Fewer if someone in your house treats it as a side dish.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: For anyone who misses a proper British breakfast, yes. It is the sort of present that gets opened and used the very next morning.

More about Daddies Brown Sauce

Brown sauce is the great British breakfast condiment. It sits on the cafΓ© table next to the ketchup and the salt, and every household has its loyalty. Daddies has been one of the names in that bottle for well over a century, the one plenty of families quietly swore by.

You can spend ten minutes describing brown sauce to a Canadian friend and still not get it across. It is not a barbecue sauce and it is not a steak sauce. It is the taste of a cooked breakfast at your nan's, and once you are craving it, only the actual bottle will do.

A 400g bottle gives you a good run of breakfasts, depending on how heavy your hand is. It goes on bacon, sausages, chips and cheese on toast, and a spoonful stirred into a stew or a gravy does no harm at all. Keep it in the cupboard until it is opened, then follow the label.

People tend to pick it up with the rest of the fry-up kit: the tea, the beans, and whatever else makes Saturday morning feel like home.
