About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Costa Hot Chocolate

About Costa Hot Chocolate

Some days need a coffee. Some days have gone on far too long for that. Costa Hot Chocolate is for the second sort.

If you ever ducked into a Costa on a wet high street, or at a station with twenty minutes to kill, you know this one. Rich, chocolatey, the mug you ordered when you could not face another flat white.

Now it is in your own kitchen. No queue, no name scrawled on a cup, nobody counting how many you have had.

Kettle on, mug out, sofa claimed. The rest is your business.

Frequently asked questions about Costa Hot Chocolate

Q: Is this the UK version of Costa Hot Chocolate?

A: Yes, it is the British product from the Costa you know from home, and we ship it from within Canada. Same red branding, same mug at the end of it.

Q: How big is the pack?

A: It is a 300g pack of powder, so it keeps you going for a good run of mugs rather than one rainy afternoon.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: For anyone who misses a Costa run, very much so. Add a box of proper British biscuits and you have covered the whole afternoon.

More about Costa Hot Chocolate

In Britain, Costa is part of the furniture. It is on the high street, at the station, at the motorway services when you are halfway up the M6 and losing the will. The red cup is as familiar as a red post box, and the hot chocolate has always been the quiet favourite of people who do not drink coffee at all.

People in Canada look for it because it tastes like a particular afternoon: shopping bags at your feet, rain on the window, nowhere to be for an hour. A mug of it on a cold evening here gets you surprisingly close.

It is a 300g pack of hot chocolate powder for making at home. Spoon it into a mug and follow the directions on the pack. Keep it sealed in a cool, dry cupboard between mugs, and it will sit there quite happily until the next long day.

Costa also does coffee for home, but most people pair this with something to dunk. A packet of British biscuits beside the kettle is never a bad idea, and a hot chocolate with nothing to dunk is really just a warm drink.
