About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Colman's English Mustard

About Colman's English Mustard

Somebody at the table always takes too much. Their eyes water, everyone else laughs, and nobody learns a thing. That is Colman's English Mustard doing its job.

The bright yellow jar sits next to the roast beef at every proper Sunday lunch in Britain, and beside the ham sandwiches, the sausages and the pork pie. It does not whisper. It goes straight up your nose and clears out the week.

If you grew up with it, you know exactly which jar you were looking for. Here it is, same yellow label, same kick.

Frequently asked questions about Colman's English Mustard

Q: Is this the UK version of Colman's English Mustard?

A: It is, the proper one from Britain with the yellow label you could pick out of a crowded fridge. It ships to you from within Canada, so the next roast beef sandwich has no excuses.

Q: How hot is it, really?

A: Hotter than you remember, every single time. Somebody always takes a full knife's worth on the first go. It is never the person who grew up with it.

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 100g jar, which sounds modest until you notice most people use it a fingertip at a time. With ham, sausages or a Sunday roast, it lasts longer than you would think.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. Pop it in a parcel with a few other bits from Britain and watch which jar gets opened first.

More about Colman's English Mustard

English mustard is the hot one. It is not there to add a gentle tang. It is there to make roast beef sing, to wake up a slice of cold ham and to give a pork pie something to argue with. Colman's is the name most British kitchens reach for.

In Canada, people tend to go looking for it the week they decide to do a proper roast. The beef is sorted, the Yorkshires are planned, and then someone asks where the mustard is. It is a small jar that makes a dinner feel like home.

The 100g jar is ready to use, no mixing. You need a lot less than you think, a dab on the side of the plate rather than a spread, so a jar keeps going for a good while. It also earns its place in a cheese sauce, a ham glaze or a sausage sandwich.

Colman's makes more than this one jar in Britain, including the famous mustard powder in its yellow tin. People who buy this usually have gravy granules and a roast dinner in mind too.
