About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Cadbury White Buttons

About Cadbury White Buttons

Nobody eats one White Button. They eat one, then six, then fold the bag over as if that settles anything.

Cadbury White Buttons are the little flat discs of white chocolate that turned up in lunchboxes, in coat pockets on long car journeys, and in the sticky hands of small children who then needed a wipe. Smooth, sweet, gone quickly.

If you grew up in Britain, you had an opinion on white versus milk Buttons, and you probably still do. This bag is for the white side of that argument.

It has waited long enough. So have you.

Frequently asked questions about Cadbury White Buttons

Q: Is this the UK version of Cadbury White Buttons?

A: Yes. These are made in the United Kingdom, the same White Buttons you would pick up in a British corner shop, and we ship them from within Canada.

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is an 85g bag, a proper handful of buttons. Whether that counts as one serving is between you and your conscience.

Q: How do they arrive?

A: Packed with the rest of your order and sent out from the shop in Halifax. White chocolate and heat are not friends, so in the warmer months it is worth getting the bag into a cool cupboard soon after it lands.

Q: Are they a good gift for someone who misses Britain?

A: Very much so. Hand a bag of White Buttons to anyone who grew up in Britain and watch them go quiet for a moment, then open it.

More about Cadbury White Buttons

Buttons live in that corner of British sweets that started out as a children's thing and never quite let the grown-ups go. The white ones are the paler cousin of Cadbury's milk chocolate Buttons, and plenty of people will tell you they are the better of the two.

People in Canada go looking for them for very particular reasons. The taste of a Saturday trip to the newsagent. A child of your own who has never tried one and needs educating. Or simply the fact that nothing else melts on the tongue in quite that way when you have spent years remembering it.

The 85g bag is a good handful, enough to share if you are feeling generous and enough not to if you are not. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard and out of the sun, because a warm car turns Buttons into one large Button. They also do a fine job pressed on top of a birthday cake.

Cadbury makes a long line of British favourites, from Dairy Milk to Twirl and Flake. White Buttons often end up in the basket next to the milk chocolate ones, so nobody has to pick a side.
