In the British chocolate aisle the Picnic has always been the odd one out. Dairy Milk is smooth and well behaved. Picnic is the cousin who turns up with mud on his boots and is still everyone's favourite by the end of the afternoon.

People in Canada go looking for it because you cannot explain a Picnic, you can only hand one over. Someone mentions it, nobody at the table knows what they mean, and suddenly finding one becomes a small personal mission.

It is a single bar, the size you would grab at a newsagent's till, which makes it easy to tuck into a lunch box or a coat pocket. Keep it somewhere cool and dry in the cupboard, away from the radiator, and it will hold its shape (such as it is) until you get to it.

Picnic sits in the wider Cadbury family alongside Dairy Milk, Wispa, Double Decker and Boost, and people rarely buy just the one. A handful of different bars for a parcel to a homesick friend is a very British way of saying you were thinking of them.
