About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Simpkins Mulled Wine Travel Sweets

About Simpkins Mulled Wine Travel Sweets

Mulled wine flavour hard sweets in a proper Simpkins tin are not the sort of thing you stumble across in a Canadian supermarket, which is exactly why people go looking for them. These are British travel sweets in the most straightforward sense: small, hard, flavourful and packed in a collectible tin that has been doing the rounds in the UK for longer than most people can remember.

Simpkins Mulled Wine Travel Sweets come in a 200g tin of mulled wine flavour glucose drops, imported from the United Kingdom. The format is classic Simpkins: a hinged tin small enough for a coat pocket, filled with hard sweets that have a warming, spiced character without any alcohol involved. Worth knowing before anyone asks.

For British expats in Canada, a Simpkins tin carries a very specific kind of weight. It might be a memory of a relative's handbag, a car journey, or a tin sitting on the sideboard at Christmas. The Great British Shop stocks them precisely because that recognition matters, and because nobody should have to explain to a friend what they are hoping arrives in the post from home.

These sweets are confirmed gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians, which makes them a reasonably straightforward option for sharing. The mulled wine flavour is the only variety in this tin, so there are no surprises, just the one thing done consistently and well.

More about Simpkins Mulled Wine Travel Sweets

Simpkins Travel Sweets sit in a particular corner of the British confectionery world: hard-boiled glucose drops in collectible tins, made in the UK and sold in flavours that tend toward the nostalgic and the seasonal. The mulled wine variety is the sort of thing that appears in British shops around autumn and winter, carrying the warming, spiced character of the drink without any of the actual wine. Gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians, they are the kind of sweet that suits a broad range of people without making a fuss about it.

For Canadians who spent time in the UK, or who grew up in a British household, Simpkins tins occupy a very specific memory. The mulled wine flavour in particular tends to surface around Christmas, which is when a lot of people start looking for the British version of the season rather than the North American one.

The 200g tin is a sensible size: not so large it feels like a commitment, and compact enough to fit in a coat pocket or a desk drawer. It keeps well at room temperature, which makes it a reliable thing to have around through the colder months.

Simpkins produce a range of Travel Sweet flavours and tins, and the mulled wine sits naturally alongside the rest of the Simpkins in Canada range. Anyone building out a British sweet selection will find more to explore in the wider British sweets section.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether someone in Fredericton is restocking a winter tin or a household in Oshawa or Charlottetown is putting together a seasonal gift, there is no overseas parcel wait involved.
