About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Simpkins Hangover Drops

About Simpkins Hangover Drops

Simpkins Hangover Drops are the sort of British sweet tin that gets a second glance at the checkout, mostly because of the name, and then ends up in the basket anyway. These are classic fruit-flavoured hard drops with ginseng extract, presented in the familiar Simpkins tin format that has been sitting on British sweet shop shelves for longer than most people can remember.

The 200g tin contains fruit-flavoured hard sweets made with natural flavours and ginseng extract, with the kind of no-nonsense ingredient list that Simpkins has always favoured. The tin keeps everything tidy and together, which is more than can be said for a paper bag at the bottom of a coat pocket.

For British expats in Canada, Simpkins tins occupy a very specific place in the memory, somewhere between a corner shop counter and a relative's sideboard. The Great British Shop imports these directly from the United Kingdom, so there is no need to wait on a parcel from home or hope that someone remembers to pack them in their luggage.

Simpkins Hangover Drops are available here in the 200g tin, imported from the UK and shipped across Canada. The name does the marketing for them, really, but the sweets themselves are straightforward fruit drops with a bit of ginseng character and a tin that feels properly British in the hand.

More about Simpkins Hangover Drops

Simpkins Hangover Drops sit within a long British tradition of novelty-named hard sweets that are, underneath the joke, simply good fruit drops. The name does the marketing; the ginseng extract does whatever ginseng extract is supposed to do; and the sweets themselves are the kind of firm, slowly-dissolving hard candy that British confectionery has always done well.

For Canadians searching for British sweets with a bit of personality, or for anyone who spotted these in a UK shop and wants to find them again on this side of the Atlantic, Simpkins Hangover Drops are not the easiest thing to track down locally. That is where a British importer comes in useful.

The 200g tin is a reasonable size for a desk drawer, a glove compartment, or a gift bag where you want something that raises an eyebrow before it gets opened. Hard drops store well at room temperature and the tin keeps them from turning into a sticky cluster, which is a genuine practical advantage over bags.

Simpkins make a wide range of travel sweets and fruit drops in similar tins, covering everything from traditional flavours to more specific combinations. If this one appeals, the broader Simpkins range in Canada is worth a look, alongside the wider selection of British sweets available here.

Whether you are in Burlington or Montreal, the tin ships from within Canada rather than arriving battered from an overseas parcel. A small thing, but a tin that arrives intact is considerably more useful than one that does not.
