About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Simpkins Coffee Flavoured Drops

About Simpkins Coffee Flavoured Drops

Coffee-flavoured hard sweets have a particular kind of fan: the sort of person who will fish one out of a tin on someone's desk and quietly hope there are more. Simpkins Coffee Flavoured Drops are exactly that sweet, and this is the British version, imported from Sheffield and available in Canada without anyone having to pack them in a suitcase.

The 175g tin holds classic hard-boiled coffee drops with a straightforward, proper coffee flavour. No fruit medley, no mixed surprises. Just the one thing, done consistently, in the kind of tin that looks at home on a mantelpiece or a desk drawer and does not draw attention to itself.

Simpkins tins have been a fixture in British sweet shops for a long time, and for anyone who grew up with them, the format is as familiar as the flavour. The Great British Shop carries them as part of a wider range of British sweets shipped across Canada, so there is no need to rely on the vague international aisle or wait on a parcel from a relative who may or may not remember.

The drops are made in the United Kingdom and the 175g tin keeps everything together neatly, which is more than can be said for a bag. The flavour is coffee throughout, which sounds obvious but is worth saying plainly given how many sweets promise one thing and deliver something more ambiguous.

More about Simpkins Coffee Flavoured Drops

Simpkins Coffee Flavoured Drops sit within a long tradition of British hard-boiled sweets: single-flavour, no-nonsense, made to be savoured slowly rather than eaten by the handful. The coffee drop is one of the more grown-up entries in that category, the kind of sweet that tends to live in a desk tin rather than a party bowl.

For British expats and Canadians with a taste for UK confectionery, coffee drops are genuinely difficult to replicate locally. The flavour profile of a proper British coffee sweet is specific enough that nothing quite substitutes for the real thing, which is why people go looking for them online rather than settling for whatever the corner shop has.

The 175g tin is a sensible pantry size: enough to last, compact enough to tuck into a cupboard or a desk drawer, and it keeps well without any fuss. There is no refrigeration needed and no best-before anxiety if you are the sort of person who makes a tin last a while.

Simpkins produce a wider range of drop tins across flavours including travel sweets, fruit drops and mint selections. If coffee is your flavour, this is the one to reach for, but the Simpkins range in Canada is worth a look if you want to stock up on a few varieties alongside the broader range of British sweets available here.

The Great British Shop ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Toronto, Halifax, Montreal or London, Ontario, these arrive without the delays or duties that come with ordering from overseas.
