About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Millions Watermelon

About Millions Watermelon

Watermelon Millions in Canada is one of those things that takes a bit of finding, which is a shame because the bag disappears in about four minutes flat.

Millions are tiny, chewy, grain-shaped sweets with a slightly crunchy outer shell and a big fruit flavour packed into something not much larger than a grain of rice. The watermelon variety has that sharp, sweet, summery flavour that somehow manages to taste exactly like watermelon without ever having been near one. The 55g bag is the classic grab-and-go size, and yes, sharing is theoretically possible.

For anyone who grew up in the UK, Millions were a corner shop staple, usually bought in a small paper bag or a tube, eaten by the fistful on the way home from school. Finding them in Canada used to mean waiting for someone to visit from back home or hoping a parcel arrived intact. The Great British Shop imports them directly from the UK, so neither of those things is necessary any more.

Watermelon is one of the more vivid flavours in the Millions range, and the format stays true to the original British sweets people remember. Made in the United Kingdom, the 55g bag is small enough to tuck into a bag and optimistic enough to suggest you might make it last more than one sitting.

Frequently asked questions about Millions Watermelon

Q: What are Millions Watermelon sweets like to eat?

A: Millions are tiny, grainy, chewy sweets with a texture that is distinctive enough to be instantly recognisable to anyone who grew up buying them by the tube or scoop. The watermelon variety carries a flavour that is bold and familiar in the way British pick-and-mix sweets tend to be. They are small enough to eat by the handful, which is more or less the intended approach, and the 55g bag has a way of disappearing faster than expected.

Q: Is Millions Watermelon the UK version of the sweet?

A: Yes, Millions Watermelon imported by The Great British Shop is the UK product, made in the United Kingdom. For British expats in Canada, that matters because Millions have a very specific texture and flavour that is tied to a particular memory, usually a newsagent counter or a school tuck shop. It is the sort of thing that is oddly hard to replace with something approximate, which is why people tend to look for the actual British version rather than a loose stand-in.

Q: How much do Millions Watermelon sweets weigh, and is the 55g bag a sharing size?

A: Each bag is 55g, which is a single-serve size in the sense that it is meant for one person and will likely stay that way. It is the right size for a lunchbox, a desk drawer, or slipping into a care package alongside other British sweets. If you are buying for sharing or as a gift, picking up a few bags is the more realistic plan.

More about Millions Watermelon

Millions sit firmly in the British pick-and-mix tradition: small, intensely flavoured sweets sold by the tube, the scoop or the bag, designed to be eaten in quantity rather than rationed carefully. The watermelon variety is part of a range that covers several fruit flavours, each with the same distinctive grainy, chewy texture that makes Millions immediately recognisable as a category of their own within British sweets.

For Canadians who grew up in the UK, finding Millions watermelon here tends to involve either a lot of luck or knowing where to look. The flavour is specific enough, and the texture unusual enough, that there is no straightforward substitute when the craving arrives.

The 55g bag is a compact, cupboard-friendly size: no refrigeration needed, no fuss, and it fits easily into a desk drawer or a lunchbox. It is also the kind of thing that survives being posted to someone, which makes it a reasonable addition to a care package.

Millions Watermelon sits alongside the wider Millions in Canada range, which includes other fruit varieties for anyone building a proper British sweet selection or revisiting a few different flavours at once.

The Great British Shop ships from within Canada, so whether someone in Ottawa or Cambridge is restocking a sweet tin, or a parcel is heading to Kitchener or Moncton, it arrives without the delays and duties that come with ordering directly from overseas.
