About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Millions Cola

About Millions Cola

There is a very particular kind of sweet that lives in the corner shop memory with unusual clarity, and Millions Cola is one of them. Tiny, chewy, intensely flavoured and sold in a bag that never quite lasted the walk home, it is the sort of British confectionery that people from the UK describe with a specific fondness that slightly surprises everyone else.

Millions Cola comes in the familiar small bag format, packed with those miniature chewy pieces that deliver a concentrated cola flavour in a way that is quite disproportionate to their size. The texture is the thing people remember most, somewhere between chewy and crumbly, with that sharp fizzy-sweet hit that made them a fixture on the school tuck shop shelf.

For British expats in Canada, finding the actual UK version rather than something vaguely similar matters more than it probably should. The Great British Shop stocks Millions Cola imported from the United Kingdom, so there is no need to wait on a parcel from a relative or hunt through an international aisle hoping for the best.

The 55g bag is the kind of portion that is officially for sharing and practically never is. Millions also come in other flavours if cola is not your particular obsession, though for a lot of people it very much is.

Frequently asked questions about Millions Cola

Q: What do Millions Cola sweets taste like?

A: Millions have a taste that is genuinely hard to put into words, which is part of why people remember them so specifically. They are tiny, chewy, and intensely flavoured in a way that feels instantly familiar to anyone who grew up buying them by the bag from a British newsagent. The cola variety carries that distinctive fizzy-sweet character the brand is known for, and the small size means you tend to eat far more of them than you planned.

Q: Is Millions Cola the UK version of the sweet?

A: Yes, Millions Cola is imported from the United Kingdom, so it is the same product sold in British corner shops and newsagents. For anyone in Canada who grew up with Millions, that matters, because the format, the chew, and the flavour intensity are specific to the UK product. It is the sort of thing that ends up in a British shop order alongside a few other things you did not realise you missed until you saw them.

Q: How much do Millions Cola sweets weigh, and is the 55g bag a sharing size?

A: The bag is listed at 55g, which sounds modest but is actually a reasonable amount given how small each individual sweet is. Whether it qualifies as a sharing size depends entirely on your intentions and how quickly the bag is opened. In practice, Millions tend to be eaten in one sitting by one person, which is arguably the correct approach for a bag of British sweets you have been thinking about since you left the UK.

More about Millions Cola

Millions Cola sits within a specific corner of the British sweets category: tiny, intensely flavoured chewy pieces sold in small bags, designed for snacking by the handful rather than one at a time. The format has been a fixture in British newsagents and corner shops for years, and the cola variety is one of the range's most recognisable flavours alongside fruit options like strawberry and blackcurrant.

For British expats and Canadians with a connection to the UK, tracking down Millions in Canada is the kind of search that comes up regularly. The sweets are specific enough to British childhood memory that a loose substitute simply does not carry the same weight, and finding the actual UK product matters to people in a way that is quietly disproportionate to the bag size.

The 55g bag is compact and cupboard-friendly, needs no refrigeration, and keeps well in a drawer or a care package. That makes it a practical choice for posting to someone who misses home, or for keeping a small stash without dedicating much shelf space to it.

Millions Cola fits naturally alongside the broader range of British sweets available here, including other Millions varieties and the kind of pick-and-mix staples that tend to disappear faster than expected once opened.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether someone in Fredericton is rebuilding a British sweet drawer or a parcel is heading to Victoria or Halifax, there is no waiting on an overseas delivery.
