About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Tate Lyle Pure Cane Caster Sugar

About Tate Lyle Pure Cane Caster Sugar

Caster sugar sounds simple enough until you are mid-recipe and realise the stuff in your cupboard is not quite dissolving the way it should. For British bakers in Canada, Tate & Lyle Pure Cane Caster Sugar is the one they mean when a recipe says caster sugar, full stop.

This is the 500g bag of Tate & Lyle's fine-grain pure cane caster sugar, imported from the United Kingdom. The finer grain sits between granulated and icing sugar, which is exactly why it matters for cakes, meringues, shortbread, and anything else where you want the sugar to incorporate quickly and evenly without leaving grit behind.

British baking recipes are written with this kind of sugar in mind, and if you have ever wondered why a Victoria sponge made here did not quite behave the way your nan's did, the sugar is not an unreasonable place to start looking. The Great British Shop stocks it precisely because it is the sort of pantry staple British expats quietly run out of and then spend too long trying to source.

Tate & Lyle Pure Cane Caster Sugar is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and it is made from pure cane sugar, which is how Tate & Lyle have always done it. At 500g it is the standard UK size, right for keeping in the baking cupboard rather than buying in bulk.

Frequently asked questions about Tate Lyle Pure Cane Caster Sugar

Q: What is caster sugar and why do British baking recipes call for it specifically?

A: Caster sugar is a finely milled white sugar with a grain size that sits between granulated and icing sugar. British baking recipes call for it because it dissolves quickly and evenly into batters and creamed mixtures, which matters for things like Victoria sponges, shortbread, and meringues. Tate and Lyle have been producing cane sugar in the UK since 1878, and their caster sugar is made from 100 per cent pure cane sugar, which is what most classic British recipes are written around.

Q: Is Tate and Lyle Caster Sugar suitable for vegans?

A: Yes, Tate and Lyle Pure Cane Caster Sugar is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. The ingredients are simply 100 per cent pure cane sugar, with nothing else added. Some cane sugars are processed using bone char as a filtration agent, which is why vegan bakers often look for a confirmed vegan claim rather than assuming from the ingredient list alone. This one carries that confirmation.

Q: Is this the same Tate and Lyle caster sugar sold in UK supermarkets?

A: Yes, this is the UK-produced Tate and Lyle Pure Cane Caster Sugar, made in the United Kingdom from raw cane sugar sourced internationally, exactly as it is sold in British supermarkets. For anyone baking from British recipes in Canada, or simply used to the familiar blue and gold packaging from home, it is the same product rather than a North American substitute. The 500g size is the standard UK pack.
