About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Jacobs TUC Cheese Sandwich

About Jacobs TUC Cheese Sandwich

If you grew up in Britain reaching for a packet of TUC Cheese Sandwich biscuits at a petrol station or out of a lunchbox, you already know exactly what these are and why you are looking for them in Canada.

Jacobs TUC Cheese Sandwich are the classic sandwich cracker that pairs two thin, lightly salted TUC biscuits around a cheese-flavoured filling. The result is that specific combination of crisp, slightly buttery cracker and savoury filling that has been a staple of British snacking for decades. This is the 150g pack, imported from the United Kingdom.

The Great British Shop stocks TUC Cheese Sandwich for exactly the reason you might expect: people ask for them, and they should not have to rely on a family member packing them into a suitcase. Having the real UK version available and shipping from Canada makes the whole thing considerably less complicated.

TUC Cheese Sandwich biscuits are suitable for vegetarians, which makes them a reliable option for sharing. They work well enough on their own, though anyone who has ever eaten half a pack in a car park will tell you they need very little assistance.

Frequently asked questions about Jacobs TUC Cheese Sandwich

Q: What do Jacob's TUC Cheese Sandwich crackers taste like?

A: Each TUC Cheese Sandwich is two thin, lightly salted crackers with a creamy cheese-flavoured filling in the middle. The filling is made with dried powdered cheese and dried whey, which gives it a mild, savoury dairy flavour with a faint hint of white pepper. The cracker itself is crisp and slightly buttery. It is the kind of snack that disappears from the packet faster than you intended.

Q: Are Jacob's TUC Cheese Sandwich crackers suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Jacob's TUC Cheese Sandwich crackers are suitable for vegetarians. They do contain several milk-derived ingredients, including dried powdered cheese, dried whey, and lactose, so they are not suitable for vegans. The pack also contains wheat, barley, eggs, soya, and sulphites, and may contain nuts and peanuts, which is worth knowing if you are buying for someone with allergies.

Q: Is this the UK version of Jacob's TUC Cheese Sandwich crackers?

A: Yes, this is the UK-made version, produced by Jacob's Bakery in Leicestershire and imported into Canada. TUC crackers are widely available across Britain and are the sort of thing that ends up in school lunchboxes, desk drawers, and the back of kitchen cupboards in roughly equal measure. For British expats in Canada, finding the actual UK pack rather than a loose substitute is usually the whole point.

More about Jacobs TUC Cheese Sandwich

Jacob's TUC Cheese Sandwich sits in the sandwich cracker category, a format that is common enough in British grocery culture but harder to place on a Canadian supermarket shelf. The combination of two savoury crackers with a cheese-flavoured filling in the middle is a distinctly British pantry and lunchbox staple, quite different from anything that tends to occupy the cracker aisle here.

For British expats and anyone who spent time in the UK, TUC Cheese Sandwich biscuits are the kind of thing that surfaces in a very specific memory: a petrol station forecourt, a school packed lunch, a long car journey. Finding them in Canada without relying on a suitcase or an overseas parcel is the whole point.

The 150g pack is a sensible single-serve or short-term size, easy to keep in a desk drawer or a cupboard. Once opened, an airtight container keeps them crisp. They are confirmed suitable for vegetarians, which is worth knowing if you are putting together a mixed snack spread.

TUC Cheese Sandwich is part of the broader Jacob's in Canada range stocked here, which includes other familiar Jacob's lines for anyone rebuilding a British biscuit tin from scratch. They sit naturally alongside other British pantry favourites that tend to be the first things people notice are missing.

The 150g pack ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Kitchener, Montreal, or Kingston, it arrives without the delays and customs uncertainty that come with ordering direct from overseas.
