About Bonds of London Sherbet Lemons

About Bonds of London Sherbet Lemons

Sherbet lemons are one of those British sweets that need no introduction to anyone who grew up raiding a pick-and-mix or fishing around in a paper bag on the back seat of a car. Bonds of London Sherbet Lemons are the real thing, imported from the United Kingdom and available here in Canada without anyone needing to smuggle them over in hand luggage.

Each sweet is a hard, lemon-flavoured boiled shell with a fizzy sherbet centre that catches you slightly off guard every time, even when you know it is coming. The 150g bag is the kind of thing that starts with good intentions and ends considerably faster than planned.

For British expats in Canada, this is exactly the sort of sweet that sits in a very specific corner of memory. The Great British Shop stocks Bonds of London Sherbet Lemons precisely because some things are worth getting right, and a sherbet lemon that tastes like a sherbet lemon is one of them.

Sherbet Lemons from Bonds of London are dairy-free, which makes them straightforward to share around. Bonds have been making traditional British confectionery for a long time, and this particular sweet has the kind of stubborn staying power that suggests people genuinely want it rather than just tolerating it out of habit.

Frequently asked questions about Bonds of London Sherbet Lemons

Q: What do Bonds Sherbet Lemons taste like?

A: Sherbet Lemons are hard boiled sweets with a zesty lemon flavour and a fizzy sherbet centre that kicks in once you get through the outer shell. The combination of sharp citric acid and the fizzing sherbet is what makes them so distinctive. They are the sort of sweet that demands your full attention for about thirty seconds, and then you immediately want another one.

Q: Are Bonds Sherbet Lemons dairy-free?

A: Yes, Bonds Sherbet Lemons are dairy-free. The ingredients are built around sugar, glucose syrup, dextrose, citric acid, and flavouring, with no milk or milk-derived ingredients. They may contain traces of nuts and peanuts due to manufacturing, so anyone with a nut allergy should bear that in mind, but for people avoiding dairy they are a straightforward choice.

Q: Are Bonds Sherbet Lemons the same as the ones from British pick-and-mix?

A: Yes, these are the UK version, made in the United Kingdom by Bonds of London, one of the longer-standing names in British confectionery. Sherbet Lemons were a pick-and-mix staple for decades, the kind of sweet that cost a few pence each and took a serious amount of time to finish. For British expats in Canada, the 150g bag is a fairly efficient way to revisit that particular memory.

More about Bonds of London Sherbet Lemons

Sherbet Lemons are one of the most recognisable sweets in the British pick-and-mix tradition: a hard boiled lemon shell with a fizzing sherbet centre that has been a fixture in corner shops, market stalls and sweet jars across the UK for generations. Bonds of London has been producing this style of classic British confectionery for well over a century, and the Sherbet Lemon sits at the heart of what they do.

For British expats and Canadians with family ties to the UK, Sherbet Lemons are the kind of sweet that carries a specific memory. They are not easily substituted with something local, which is why people in Kitchener and Hamilton search for them by name rather than settling for a near-enough alternative.

This is a 150g bag, which is a sensible size for a cupboard sweet. It keeps well at room temperature in a cool, dry spot away from sunlight, so there is no fridge space required and no rush to get through it. The bag is also confirmed dairy-free, which is worth knowing if you are buying for mixed dietary needs.

Bonds makes a broad range of British sweets beyond the Sherbet Lemon, from cola bottles to mint imperials, and browsing Bonds in Canada gives a good sense of the full range. If you are building out a wider sweet selection, the British sweets collection covers everything from boiled sweets to chews.

The bag ships from within Canada, which keeps delivery times sensible and avoids the unpredictability of overseas parcels. Whether it is for a nostalgic moment or a care package, it arrives in the kind of condition a hard boiled sweet deserves.

The story of Bonds of London Sherbet Lemons

Nobody waits for the middle

You are supposed to suck it slowly. Nobody ever has. About a minute in, the patience runs out, you bite, and the sherbet goes everywhere it was never meant to go. Sherbet lemons are one of the retro classics Bonds of London is best known for in its sweet jars, so this is the proper article. It's the same one that sat in the jar on the top shelf, the one you had to point at because you could not reach it.

Old firm, young buyer

Trade press described Bonds of London as one of the UK's oldest sweet businesses when it was sold in April 2016. The buyer was US-foods wholesaler Innovative Bites, founded in 2008 by Vishal Madhu, in a multimillion-pound deal. So an eight-year-old company bought one of the oldest sweet firms in the country. Managing director Philip Courtenay-Luck stayed on with the business afterwards, which is a reassuring sign that nobody planned to tamper with the jars.

Somebody likes pick'n'mix

Vishal Madhu said Bonds of London has historically been known for traditional British sweets such as pick'n'mix jars and hanging bags. He clearly meant it. A year after buying Bonds, Innovative Bites went on to acquire pick'n'mix wholesaler Hancocks Cash & Carry in a deal worth about Β£100m. That is a lot of money riding on people standing in front of a wall of sweets with a scoop and a paper bag, swearing they will only have a few.

Where they actually live

Sherbet lemons were never really eaten at a table. They lived in a paper bag from the corner shop, in the glovebox for long drives, in the bottom of a coat pocket where they went slightly furry. Every gran had a stash in her handbag, handed out one at a time for good behaviour in church. You might be an adult now, with your own handbag. Nobody is stopping you.
