About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary

About Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary

Truffle crisps have a certain reputation for taking themselves very seriously, and Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary earns that seriousness without making a fuss about it. This is a British crisp, made in the United Kingdom, and it is the kind of thing that makes a 40g bag feel like a considered decision rather than an afterthought.

The flavour here is black summer truffle paired with rosemary, which gives you something earthy and aromatic in equal measure. It is not a subtle nudge in the truffle direction; it is a proper commitment to the combination. The result is a crisp that works as well alongside a glass of something decent as it does eaten quietly over a kitchen counter when nobody is watching.

Savoursmiths sits at the more grown-up end of the British crisp shelf, and The Great British Shop carries the range for anyone in Canada who would rather not wait on a parcel from the UK or rely on a well-meaning relative with limited luggage space. These are imported from the United Kingdom and available to ship across Canada.

The 40g bag is confirmed gluten-free, which makes it a useful option if you are shopping for someone with dietary requirements and still want to hand them something genuinely worth eating. No compromises on flavour to get there.

Frequently asked questions about Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary

Q: What do Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary crisps taste like?

A: The flavour is built around dried black truffle powder and rosemary, with mushroom extract, garlic, thyme and white pepper all working in the background. The result is earthy and aromatic rather than sharp or salty, with a complexity that sits closer to a restaurant snack bowl than a standard crisp. It is the sort of thing you eat slowly because you are actually paying attention to it.

Q: Are Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary crisps gluten-free?

A: Yes, Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary crisps are gluten-free. The ingredients include potato, sunflower oil, rice flour and natural flavourings, with no wheat or barley in the recipe. For anyone navigating British snack options in Canada while avoiding gluten, this is one of the more interesting choices available.

Q: Are Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary crisps made in the UK?

A: Yes, they are made in England, which is part of what makes them a genuine British import rather than a locally produced approximation. Savoursmiths is a British brand, and the 40g bags shipped to Canada are the same product you would find on shelves in the UK. For people who want the actual British version, that provenance is usually the point.

More about Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary

Savoursmiths sits in a corner of the British crisp market that takes flavour combinations rather more seriously than the average pub snack. The brand works with ingredients like black truffle, aged balsamic and smoked sea salt, and the Truffle & Rosemary variety is a reasonable introduction to what that approach actually produces. It is a grown-up category, and the crisps are priced and positioned accordingly.

For people in Canada who spent time in the UK, truffle crisps of this sort have a specific cultural weight. They turn up at wine bars, delis and the kind of corner shop that also sells decent cheese. Finding that same register of British snack here, without waiting on an overseas parcel, is exactly the kind of gap The Great British Shop exists to fill.

The 40g bag is a single-serve size, which makes it easy to try before committing to multiples. It is gluten-free, stores well in a cool dry place, and does not need any special handling. The format travels sensibly, which matters when you are ordering across Canada.

The wider Savoursmiths range in Canada includes other flavours worth exploring alongside this one, and the broader British crisps and snacks selection covers everything from classic ready salted to more adventurous seasonings.

Whether you are restocking a British cupboard in Calgary or sending something a bit different to someone in Brampton or Halifax, the Savoursmiths Truffle & Rosemary ships from within Canada rather than from overseas, which keeps things straightforward.
