About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafers

About Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafers

Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafers are the kind of British biscuit that does not require a sales pitch. If you grew up in the UK, you already know the wrapper, you already know the weight of it in your hand, and you almost certainly have opinions about the correct pace at which to eat one.

Each wafer is built from five layers of crisp wafer and four layers of caramel, all wrapped in a milk chocolate coating. This 4 x 30g pack is the genuine UK version, made in the United Kingdom and imported into Canada, so there is no guessing involved and no hoping someone remembered to bring a box over in their luggage.

For British expats in Canada, Tunnocks Caramel Wafers occupy a very specific place in the biscuit hierarchy. Not a special occasion biscuit, not a background biscuit. The Great British Shop stocks them precisely because they are the sort of thing people search for by name and feel quietly relieved to find without any difficulty.

The Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafer is suitable for vegetarians and ships from within Canada, which makes adding them to a regular British grocery order straightforward. The 4 pack is a reasonable size, though whether it lasts more than an afternoon is a separate matter entirely.

Frequently asked questions about Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafers

Q: What does a Tunnocks Caramel Wafer taste like?

A: Each biscuit is built from five layers of wafer and four layers of caramel, all coated in milk chocolate. The wafer gives a light crisp bite, the caramel is chewy and sweet, and the milk chocolate ties it together. It is a very specific combination that has not changed in decades, which is precisely why people who grew up with them tend to remember exactly how the first one goes.

Q: Are Tunnocks Caramel Wafers suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafers are suitable for vegetarians. They contain milk, soya and wheat (gluten), so they are not suitable for anyone avoiding those allergens. There is no gelatine in the ingredients, which is sometimes a concern with chocolate-coated biscuits, but the vegetarian status here is confirmed.

Q: Is this the genuine UK version of Tunnocks Caramel Wafers, and does it ship from within Canada?

A: Yes, these are the genuine article, made in Scotland and imported from the United Kingdom. The 4-pack ships from within Canada, so there is no waiting on a parcel from overseas or hoping it survives the Atlantic in reasonable condition. For British expats in Canada who have been making do without them, that tends to settle the matter fairly quickly.

More about Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafers

Tunnocks Milk Chocolate Caramel Wafers sit firmly in the British biscuit category, though calling them just a biscuit undersells the engineering involved. Five layers of wafer, four layers of caramel, milk chocolate coating: it is a specific construction, and it belongs in the same conversation as other Scottish confectionery exports that have quietly become non-negotiable for people who grew up eating them.

For British expats across Canada, Tunnocks Caramel Wafers are one of the more searched-for items in the British biscuits and imported UK snacks category. They are not a vague craving; people know the name, know the wrapper, and know exactly what they are looking for when they type it in.

This is the 4 x 30g multipack format, four individually wrapped wafers, each 30g, which makes them easy to portion out, share, or quietly not share. They store well in a cool, dry place and do not need refrigeration, so they travel sensibly and sit happily in a cupboard until needed.

Tunnocks makes a small but devoted range of British biscuits and confectionery, and the Caramel Wafer is its most recognisable export. If you are rebuilding a proper British biscuit tin, the full Tunnocks range in Canada is worth a look alongside the broader British biscuits selection.

The shop ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Kitchener, Moncton, Winnipeg or Calgary, there is no overseas parcel delay involved. Just the wafers, arriving as expected.
