About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Batchelors Mild Curry Super Noodles

About Batchelors Mild Curry Super Noodles

Batchelors Super Noodles have been a fixture of British cupboards, student kitchens and five-minute lunches for decades, and the Mild Curry flavour is one of the range's most enduring. If you grew up in the UK, there is a reasonable chance you ate these at some point and thought very little of it at the time. Now, in Canada, that memory has a way of becoming strangely specific.

Each 90g pack makes a single serving of soft, quick-cook noodles in a mild curry sauce. The flavour is warm rather than hot, familiar rather than complex, and that is entirely the point. It is the kind of thing that is ready before you have finished deciding what to have for lunch.

For British expats looking for a taste of home without the wait, The Great British Shop stocks Batchelors Super Noodles imported from the United Kingdom, shipped from Canada so there is no need to hope someone brings a few packs over in their luggage.

The Mild Curry variety sits alongside other Super Noodles flavours in the broader Batchelors range, making it easy to stock up on a few different options if you are the sort of person who takes their instant noodle rotation seriously. No judgement. It is a reasonable position.

Frequently asked questions about Batchelors Mild Curry Super Noodles

Q: What does Batchelors Mild Curry Super Noodles taste like?

A: The mild curry flavour comes from a blend of turmeric, coriander, fennel, anise, cardamom, clove and a hint of chilli, so it is warm and aromatic without being sharp or hot. It sits firmly in the comforting, savoury end of curry rather than anything fiery. The kind of flavour that feels entirely reasonable at lunchtime on a Tuesday, and somehow exactly right.

Q: Do Batchelors Mild Curry Super Noodles contain gluten or any other allergens?

A: Yes, Batchelors Mild Curry Super Noodles contain gluten, as the noodles are made with wheat flour. They may also contain celery, crustaceans, fish, milk, molluscs, mustard, sesame and soya, so anyone with sensitivities to those should take note. There is no gelatine in the ingredients, and the product is produced in the UK.

Q: Is this the UK version of Batchelors Super Noodles?

A: Yes, this is the UK-produced version, made in Britain and imported into Canada. For anyone who grew up eating Super Noodles as a quick after-school meal or a student staple, the Mild Curry flavour is exactly as they remember it. It is the sort of thing that ends up in a British shop order not because there is nothing else available, but because nothing else is quite the same.

More about Batchelors Mild Curry Super Noodles

Batchelors Super Noodles sit in a particular corner of the British pantry: not quite pasta, not quite instant ramen, but a category of their own that has fed generations of students, shift workers and anyone who needed something hot and filling in under five minutes. The Mild Curry variety is one of the most recognised flavours in the range, alongside classics like Chicken and Barbecue Beef.

For British expats across Canada, Super Noodles tend to appear on the "things I forgot I missed" list rather than the "things I planned to import" one. The Mild Curry flavour in particular is the sort of product that feels oddly specific to a British upbringing, and not easily substituted by anything else when the craving arrives.

Each pack is 90g, making a single serving. The format is straightforward: dried noodles with a flavour sachet, cooked on the hob or in the microwave, stored in a cool dry place until needed. It takes up almost no cupboard space and keeps well, which makes it a sensible thing to have around.

The wider Batchelors range in Canada includes other Super Noodles flavours and quick-cook products, and they sit naturally alongside other British pantry favourites for anyone rebuilding a UK-style cupboard from scratch.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in St. John's, Halifax or Cambridge, there is no waiting on an overseas parcel to arrive battered and delayed. Just noodles, ready when you are.
