About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Walker's Nonsuch Milk Chocolate Eclairs

About Walker's Nonsuch Milk Chocolate Eclairs

Milk chocolate eclairs are one of those British sweets that people describe very specifically when they are trying to explain what they miss. Not chocolate in general. Not chewy sweets in general. These ones, in the twist wraps, from the newsagent, that somehow disappeared faster than seemed physically possible.

Walker's Nonsuch Milk Chocolate Eclairs come in a 150g bag of individually twist-wrapped sweets with a chewy toffee centre coated in milk chocolate. They are the kind of thing that sits in a desk drawer under the pretence of being for later, and then are not there by mid-afternoon. This is not a design flaw.

For British expats in Canada, Walker's Nonsuch is a name that does not need much introduction. The Great British Shop carries these as part of its range of imported UK confectionery, which means no waiting on a parcel from across the Atlantic and no hoping someone remembers to bring a bag through customs. They ship from within Canada, which is considerably more reliable than either of those options.

The 150g bag is a sensible size for a cupboard, a glove box, or a desk, though all three locations have roughly the same survival rate once the bag is open. These are imported from the United Kingdom, and they are the genuine UK version of a sweet that a lot of people in Canada have been quietly looking for.

More about Walker's Nonsuch Milk Chocolate Eclairs

Walker's Nonsuch Milk Chocolate Eclairs sit within a specific corner of British confectionery: the toffee-centred, chocolate-coated sweet that has been a staple of British pick-and-mix tins, newsagent bags and office bowls for decades. Walker's Nonsuch is one of the long-standing names in this category, particularly associated with toffees and eclairs made in the English tradition.

For British expats and Anglophiles across Canada, this is the kind of sweet that prompts very specific searches: not just "chocolate sweets" but the exact product, the exact brand, because nothing else quite fits the memory. That combination of chewy toffee and milk chocolate coating is a particular sensory reference point that is hard to replicate with a substitute.

The 150g bag is a practical size: enough to share, enough to keep in a desk or kitchen cupboard, and compact enough that storage is straightforward. Cool and dry is all they need, which makes them a reliable pantry sweet rather than something that requires any fuss.

If milk chocolate eclairs are your entry point into British sweets, there is a wider world of imported UK confectionery worth exploring. The British sweets range at The Great British Shop covers a broad selection of UK favourites beyond this bag.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Toronto or St. John's, there is no overseas parcel to track and no customs uncertainty to navigate. Just a bag of eclairs, arriving sensibly.
