About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread

About Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread

Shortbread from Walker's is already a fairly serious business, and the gluten-free version does not treat itself as a consolation prize. Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread brings the same buttery, crumbly texture the tin is famous for, with the addition of chocolate chips and without the gluten, imported from the United Kingdom and available here in Canada without any suitcase logistics involved.

Each 140g pack is the proper Walker's shortbread format, baked in Scotland and carrying that characteristic snap and richness that makes it recognisable from the first bite. The chocolate chips are not an afterthought. They sit in the shortbread the way they should, which is to say evenly distributed and present in every piece rather than concentrated in one lucky corner.

For British expats who have been quietly rationing a box someone brought over, or quietly doing without, The Great British Shop stocks this as a straightforward part of the regular range. No hunting through an international aisle hoping the right version turns up. This is the UK product, shipped from Canada.

Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread is confirmed suitable for vegetarians and certified gluten-free, which makes it a genuinely useful biscuit to have around rather than just a nice one. The 140g size is the standard pack, sensible for a tin on the counter or a box in the post to someone who needs cheering up.

Frequently asked questions about Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread

Q: Are Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread are suitable for vegetarians. They are also certified gluten free, made with a rice flour, potato starch and maize flour blend rather than wheat. The biscuits do contain milk from butter and soya lecithin in the dark chocolate chips, and may contain nuts, so those are worth noting depending on your dietary needs.

Q: Is Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread actually made in Scotland?

A: It is. Walker's make their shortbread in Scotland, and this gluten free version is no exception. Walker's have been baking shortbread in Aberlour-on-Spey in the Scottish Highlands for well over a century, so there is a reasonable argument that shortbread from that particular postcode carries a certain weight. For people in Canada who grew up with Walker's tins at Christmas, the origin is part of what they are after.

Q: What is the difference between Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread and their standard shortbread?

A: The main difference is the flour blend. Where standard Walker's shortbread uses wheat flour, the gluten free version uses a combination of rice flour, potato starch and maize flour stabilised with xanthan gum. The butter content remains a generous 28 percent, and the dark chocolate chips are the same 6 percent inclusion. The result is a shortbread made for people who need to avoid gluten but do not want to compromise on the buttery character the biscuit is known for.

More about Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread

Walker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Shortbread sits within a small but genuinely useful corner of the British biscuit world: shortbread that happens to be gluten free, rather than a gluten-free product that happens to resemble shortbread. Walker's has been making shortbread in Scotland for long enough that the gluten-free version is held to the same standard as the rest of the range, which is the only sensible approach.

For anyone in Canada managing a gluten intolerance while also missing British biscuits specifically, the overlap of those two needs is not always easy to meet. British gluten-free biscuits are a different search from British biscuits in general, and finding a version from a recognisable Scottish shortbread maker is the kind of thing that tends to prompt a relieved message to a family group chat.

The 140g pack is a reasonable size for a biscuit tin staple: not so large it outstays its welcome, not so small it feels like a sample. Store it somewhere cool and dry and it keeps well, which makes it sensible for online orders arriving in Oshawa or Moncton rather than a local shop run.

Walker's produces several shortbread varieties alongside this one, and the broader Walker's range in Canada covers quite a bit of ground. If shortbread is the starting point, the wider world of British biscuits tends to expand from there.

Everything here ships from within Canada, so there is no waiting on an overseas parcel or paying import fees on top. For anyone rebuilding a British cupboard from scratch, this is a solid, practical place to start.
