About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Vimto Original Sparkling Can

About Vimto Original Sparkling Can

Vimto in a can is one of those British drinks that does not require much explanation to anyone who grew up in the UK. That particular blend of grape, raspberry and blackcurrant, fizzy and purple and slightly mysterious, is as recognisable as any soft drink on the British market, and considerably more interesting to explain at a Canadian barbecue.

This is the original sparkling Vimto, imported from the United Kingdom and sold in the classic 330ml can. It is the same recipe British people have been drinking since before carbonated drinks became a personality type, and it tastes exactly as you remember it, assuming you remember it fondly, which most people do.

For British expats across Canada, finding Vimto without waiting on a parcel from home or hoping a relative packs it in their luggage is genuinely useful. The Great British Shop stocks it as part of a wider range of British drinks and groceries shipped from Halifax, Nova Scotia, so you are not hunting through a vague international aisle hoping for the best.

Vimto Original Sparkling is suitable for vegetarians and dairy-free, which makes it an easy option for most households. The flavour is its own thing, fruity and slightly herbal in a way that is hard to replicate, and the can format means it is cold-ready from the fridge whenever you need it.

Frequently asked questions about Vimto Original Sparkling Can

Q: What does Vimto Original Sparkling taste like?

A: Vimto is genuinely difficult to describe to someone who has never had it, which is part of its charm. It is fizzy, fruity, and built around a blend of grape, blackcurrant and raspberry juices alongside natural extracts of herbs, barley malt and spices, which gives it a depth that sets it apart from a straightforward fruit drink. Most people who grew up with it could pick it out of a lineup blindfolded, and most people who did not grow up with it find it oddly compelling anyway.

Q: Does Vimto Original Sparkling contain gluten or any allergens?

A: Vimto Original Sparkling contains barley malt extract as part of the Vimto flavouring, which means it contains barley and is not suitable for people avoiding gluten or cereals containing gluten. It is confirmed suitable for vegetarians and is dairy-free. If you are buying it for someone with a barley or gluten sensitivity, that is the one to flag.

Q: Is this the same Vimto you get in the UK?

A: Yes, this is the UK version, made in Newton-le-Willows in England and imported into Canada. The recipe, the deep purple colour, and that unmistakable Vimto flavour are exactly as they are on British shelves. For anyone who grew up drinking it at school, at a chippy, or straight from the bottle on a warm afternoon, the 330ml can is a fairly reliable shortcut back to that.

More about Vimto Original Sparkling Can

Vimto sits in a curious corner of the British soft drinks world: not a cola, not a standard fruit squash, not quite anything else. It has been a fixture in British fridges and tuck shops for well over a century, and the sparkling can format is the version most people reach for without thinking, the same way you reach for a particular mug.

For British expats in Canada, Vimto Original Sparkling is one of those drinks that is simply not substitutable by memory. Canadian supermarkets carry plenty of good fruit-flavoured fizzy drinks, but none of them carry the specific combination of grape, blackcurrant, raspberry and those quieter herbal and spice notes that make Vimto what it is. That gap is exactly why people search for it.

The 330ml can is the standard single-serve size, the same format sold across the UK. It stores easily at room temperature until you are ready for it, then goes cold in the fridge. No fuss, no preparation, nothing to measure out.

Vimto produces a wider range beyond the sparkling can, including still and dilutable versions, and Vimto in Canada covers more of that range if you want to stock up properly. It sits alongside other British drinks that are equally hard to find outside the UK.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Hamilton, Calgary or Kitchener, there is no waiting on an overseas parcel or hoping customs takes a kind view of a soft drink. It arrives as a grocery order should.
