About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Vimto Cans Sugar Free

About Vimto Cans Sugar Free

Vimto is one of those British drinks that people either know immediately or have never encountered, and there is rarely anyone in between. The sugar free version in a 330ml can is the same familiar character: fizzy, fruity, purple, and built around that particular combination of grape, blackcurrant and raspberry that Vimto has made entirely its own.

This is a carbonated low calorie mixed fruit juice drink with sweeteners and zero added sugar, made in the United Kingdom from mixed fruit juices from concentrate alongside Vimto's own flavouring, which includes natural extracts of fruits, herbs, barley malt and spices. The result still tastes like Vimto. It is not a pale imitation of itself with the sugar removed.

For British expats in Canada who grew up reaching for a can of Vimto from the corner shop or finding one at the bottom of a school bag, this is the real UK version, imported and available without waiting on a parcel or hoping someone packs it in their luggage. The Great British Shop stocks it as part of a wider range of British drinks shipped from Canada.

The 330ml can is suitable for vegetarians and dairy-free, with the sugar free formula carrying no added sugar while retaining the naturally occurring fruit sugars from the juice concentrates. If you already know what Vimto tastes like, none of this will surprise you. If you do not, it is worth knowing that it occupies its own corner of the soft drink world and has done for quite some time.

Frequently asked questions about Vimto Cans Sugar Free

Q: What does Vimto Sugar Free taste like compared to regular Vimto?

A: Vimto Sugar Free carries the same distinctive mixed fruit character as the original, built from grape, blackcurrant and raspberry juices from concentrate, along with Vimto's own flavouring made with natural extracts of fruits, herbs, barley malt and spices. The sugar free version uses sucralose and acesulfame K in place of added sugar, so the flavour is recognisably Vimto: fruity, slightly purple in personality, and very much its own thing rather than a straightforward fruit drink.

Q: Does Vimto Sugar Free contain barley or any other allergens?

A: Yes, Vimto Sugar Free contains barley, specifically as a natural extract in the barley malt component of Vimto Flavouring. It is confirmed suitable for vegetarians and is dairy-free. The 330ml can is otherwise free from the more common allergens, but anyone with a sensitivity to barley or gluten-containing grains should be aware of that ingredient in the flavouring.

Q: Is Vimto Sugar Free in Canada the same UK version made by Nichols?

A: Yes, this is the UK version, manufactured by Nichols Plc in Newton-le-Willows in the United Kingdom and imported into Canada. Vimto has been made by Nichols since the drink was first produced in the early twentieth century, and the recipe, including the distinctive Vimto flavouring with its fruit, herb and spice extracts, remains the same one British shoppers know from home. For people in Canada who grew up with it, that matters more than it probably should.

More about Vimto Cans Sugar Free

Vimto sits in a fairly specific corner of the British soft drinks world: not a cola, not a standard fruit squash, but a carbonated mixed fruit drink with a flavour profile that has no real category equivalent. It belongs alongside other distinctly British fizzy drinks, the kind that fill the shelves of UK corner shops and supermarkets rather than anything widely exported, which is part of why people miss it.

For British expats in Mississauga, Guelph and across Canada, sugar free Vimto is the kind of thing that comes up in conversations about what you cannot easily replace. The sugar free variant in particular has a loyal following among people who want the familiar taste without the added sugar, and who are not interested in settling for something approximate.

The 330ml can is a single-serve format, straightforward to store at room temperature until you are ready for it. It is vegetarian suitable and dairy free, which makes it an easy fit for a range of dietary preferences without needing to check further.

Vimto produces several formats, including squash, still drinks and multipacks, so if the can suits you, the wider Vimto in Canada range is worth a look. It sits naturally alongside other British drinks that are harder to track down outside the UK.

Shipped from within Canada rather than overseas, a can reaches Oshawa or Charlottetown without the parcel lottery of international orders. It stores well, takes up minimal space, and requires no particular planning beyond keeping it somewhere cool and dry.
