About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Barr Limeade

About Barr Limeade

Limeade is not a drink that asks much of you. It is fizzy, it is sharp, it has a lime flavour that does not apologise for itself, and Barr have been doing it this way in the UK long enough that most British people would recognise the can before they even read the label.

Barr Limeade comes in a 330ml can, which is exactly the right size for a drink this direct. It is a fizzy soft drink with a tart lime character, sweetened and carbonated, and genuinely suited to being cold. It is the sort of thing that used to appear in the fridge at someone's nan's house without any particular explanation, and that was fine.

For British expats in Canada looking for the real thing, The Great British Shop stocks this as the genuine UK version, imported from the United Kingdom, so there is no need to wait on a parcel or hope someone remembers to pack it. It ships from within Canada and lands in your order like it was always meant to be there.

Barr Limeade is suitable for vegans, which is worth knowing if you are building a drinks order around it. It is a single 330ml can, fizzy, lime-forward, and entirely uncomplicated, which is sometimes exactly what the situation calls for.

Frequently asked questions about Barr Limeade

Q: What does Barr Limeade taste like?

A: Barr Limeade is a fizzy soft drink with a tart, tangy lime character that is sharp rather than sweet. The citric acid gives it a proper edge, and the carbonation keeps things lively. It is sweetened with Acesulfame K and Sucralose rather than sugar, so the lime flavour comes through cleanly without a heavy syrupy finish. Cold from the fridge is the obvious move.

Q: Is Barr Limeade suitable for vegans?

A: Yes, Barr Limeade is suitable for vegans. The ingredients are carbonated water, citric acid, flavourings, safflower concentrate, sweeteners, a stabiliser and a preservative, with no animal-derived ingredients. It is one of those quietly vegan-friendly British soft drinks that does not make a fuss about it, which is very much in keeping with the Barr approach to fizzy drinks generally.

Q: Is Barr Limeade the genuine UK version, and is it available in Canada?

A: Yes, this is the genuine UK version of Barr Limeade, manufactured by A.G. Barr P.L.C. in Scotland and imported from the United Kingdom. For people in Canada who grew up with Barr drinks, the appeal is usually the specific sharp limeade character rather than a loose substitute. It ships from within Canada, which makes ordering a 330ml can considerably less dramatic than arranging a parcel from overseas.

More about Barr Limeade

Barr Limeade sits within a long tradition of British fizzy soft drinks that lean tart rather than sweet, a category that has its own loyal following quite separate from cola or fruit juice. In the UK, canned limeade of this kind is a familiar fridge staple, and Barr's version is one of the better-known examples of the style.

For British expats in Canada, finding the specific drinks they grew up with is often harder than finding the food. Limeade in the British style, sharp and properly carbonated, is not something that maps neatly onto what Canadian supermarkets tend to stock, which is why people search for it by name.

The 330ml single can is a sensible format: it stores easily, travels without fuss, and does not need freezer space. Barr Limeade is confirmed suitable for vegans, and a cool, dry cupboard is all it asks for until you are ready to put it in the fridge.

Barr produces a range of fizzy drinks that will be familiar to anyone who grew up in the UK. If Limeade is the one you came looking for, the broader BARR in Canada range and the full selection of British drinks are worth a look alongside it.

The can ships from within Canada, so whether you are restocking a British cupboard in Hamilton or sending something familiar to family in Bedford, it arrives without the wait or the risk of an overseas parcel.
