About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Bisto Best Onion Gravy

About Bisto Best Onion Gravy

Onion gravy is one of those things that sounds simple until you taste a version that actually gets it right. Bisto Best Onion Gravy is the UK version people in Canada tend to be looking for when they realise the local alternatives are not quite scratching the itch.

This is a granule-format gravy that you make by adding hot water, giving you a smooth, savoury onion gravy in seconds. The 230g tin is a proper storecupboard size, useful enough for a roast dinner for the family or a midweek sausage situation that needs something better than nothing. Bisto Best sits a step above the standard Bisto range, with a richer, more rounded flavour that holds its own alongside roast beef, pork, or a good pie.

For British expats, Bisto is not really a brand you need to explain. It is the smell of a Sunday kitchen, the sound of a tin being opened before anyone has even finished setting the table. The Great British Shop stocks it here in Canada so you are not relying on a well-meaning relative to pack it in their luggage or hoping it turns up in a vague international aisle somewhere.

Bisto Best Onion Gravy is suitable for vegans and is dairy-free, which makes it a genuinely useful option when you are cooking for a mixed table and still want something that tastes like proper British gravy rather than a compromise. It is made in the United Kingdom and imported directly.

Frequently asked questions about Bisto Best Onion Gravy

Q: Is Bisto Best Onion Gravy suitable for vegans?

A: Yes, Bisto Best Onion Gravy is suitable for vegans and is also dairy-free. The ingredients include onion powder, onion extract, rosemary extract and black pepper extract, with soya lecithin listed as an emulsifier. It does may contain wheat and gluten, so anyone with a sensitivity to those should be aware of that. For a quick vegan-friendly gravy that works across roast dinners, pies and casseroles, it is a genuinely useful cupboard staple.

Q: What does Bisto Best Onion Gravy taste like?

A: Bisto Best Onion Gravy is smooth, savoury and built around a proper onion flavour, with garlic, black pepper and rosemary extract adding a little depth. It is the sort of gravy that tastes like it has been on the hob longer than it has. Ready in seconds with just hot water, it is designed for roast dinners, pies and casseroles rather than anything that needs a long simmer.

Q: Is this the UK version of Bisto Best Onion Gravy?

A: Yes, this is the UK-made version, produced in the United Kingdom and imported into Canada. Bisto Best is a step up from the standard granules range, made with onion extract and onion oil rather than just powder, which is what British cooks tend to reach for when the Sunday roast needs to look like it involved more effort than it did. For people in Canada who grew up with it, that distinction matters.

More about Bisto Best Onion Gravy

Bisto Best Onion Gravy sits within the broader Bisto Best range, which uses a granule format rather than a powder or liquid concentrate. The Best line is positioned above the standard Bisto granules, with a more developed flavour profile built around real onion ingredients including onion powder and onion extract, along with rosemary and black pepper. It is the kind of gravy that works across a proper roast, a bangers and mash situation, or a slow-cooked casserole that needs a little help at the end.

For British expats and Anglophile cooks across Canada, onion gravy is one of the harder things to replicate locally. The category exists, but the specific character of a British onion gravy, the savoury depth, the way it sits on a plate, tends to be what people are searching for when they go looking online for British pantry items in Canada.

The 230g tin stores easily in a cool dry place and keeps well between uses, which matters when you are not making gravy every week. A single tin goes further than you might expect, and the granule format means there is no waste between servings.

Bisto Best Onion Gravy is one of several Bisto products available here; the full Bisto in Canada range includes other gravies worth keeping alongside it, and it fits naturally into a broader set of British pantry favourites for anyone rebuilding a proper British cupboard.

It ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Toronto, Guelph, Cambridge or Halifax, there is no overseas parcel gamble involved, just a familiar tin arriving in reasonable time.
