About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix

About Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix

A proper British fruit crumble is one of those puddings that sounds simple and somehow still goes wrong without the right topping. Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix takes that variable out of the equation entirely, which is probably why it has been a fixture in British kitchen cupboards for years.

This is a 400g ready-to-use crumble topping, imported from the United Kingdom, designed to be sprinkled straight over fruit and baked until golden. No rubbing butter into flour, no guessing at ratios, no explaining to anyone why the topping came out more sand than crumble. You add the fruit, you add this, the oven does the rest.

For British expats in Canada, this is the kind of pantry staple that tends to appear on a wishlist fairly quickly after arriving. The Great British Shop stocks Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix as part of its range of genuine UK groceries shipped from within Canada, so there is no waiting on a parcel from overseas or hoping a family member remembers to pack it.

The mix is dairy-free, which is worth knowing if you are cooking for a household with mixed requirements. The custard or ice cream situation afterwards is, of course, entirely your own problem to sort out.

Frequently asked questions about Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix

Q: Is Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix dairy-free?

A: Yes, Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix is dairy-free. The 400g mix is made with wheat flour, sugar, palm oil, breadcrumb, oat flakes and rapeseed oil, with no milk or butter in the ingredients. It does contain wheat and oats, and may contain rye and barley, so it is not suitable for anyone avoiding gluten. But for those avoiding dairy specifically, it fits the bill without any substitutions required.

Q: How do you use Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix?

A: Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix is designed to be sprinkled straight over prepared fruit in a baking dish and then baked until golden. The mix of wheat flour, sugar, oat flakes and oils does the work of a rubbed-in crumble topping without the rubbing. It is the sort of shortcut that makes a proper British fruit crumble achievable on a weeknight, which is exactly when crumble is most needed. The only remaining question is custard or ice cream, and that one is yours to settle.

Q: Is Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix the UK version, and can you get it in Canada?

A: Yes, this is the genuine UK version of Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix, manufactured in the United Kingdom and imported into Canada. For British expats in Canada, crumble is one of those puddings that is oddly difficult to replicate without the right mix, partly because the oat-and-flour topping has a particular texture that is very much its own thing. Having the actual UK product available to order in Canada, rather than attempting an approximation, is the sort of small domestic win that matters more than it probably should.

More about Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix

Aunt Bessie's Crumble Mix sits in the British baking and pudding aisle as one of those quietly reliable pantry items that home bakers reach for when they want a proper crumble topping without the faff of making one from scratch. In the UK it is the sort of box that lives permanently at the back of the cupboard, ready for whenever a bag of cooking apples or frozen rhubarb needs a purpose.

For British expats in Canada, crumble mix is one of those specific baking products that simply does not have a straightforward local substitute. It is not that crumble cannot be made from scratch here; it is that the particular texture and balance of this ready-mixed topping is tied to a specific memory of Sunday puddings, and that is not something you can replicate by reading a recipe card.

The 400g box stores easily in a cool, dry cupboard and keeps well between uses, which matters if you are only making crumble occasionally. It is also confirmed dairy-free, which makes it useful for households managing dairy intolerances without needing to adapt the recipe.

Aunt Bessie's produces a broader range of British frozen and ambient products, and the crumble mix fits naturally alongside the rest of the Aunt Bessie's in Canada range, or within a wider order from the British pantry favourites collection.

The mix ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver or Halifax, it arrives without the delays or customs uncertainty that come with ordering directly from overseas.
